Expert Tips: How To Keep Your Skin Fresh On Holiday

Don’t get us wrong – we love a holiday – but we’re not so keen on the toll it takes on our skin. Humidity, dry skin, peeling sun tans – who needs it?

To do our best to keep our skin looking (and feeling) fresh on our holidays (and staycations) this summer, we’ve had a chat with Dion Nash, the founder of skincare brand Triumph & Disaster, for some insider tips. Take note, guys.

How can holiday heat affect our skin?

Dry, humid, arid climates will wick moisture away from the skin’s surface leaving it dry, chaffed and irritable –  so for high altitude and climates, take heaps of moisturiser and use it often. Do the same with lip balms – carry them and use them.

For hot humid destinations, you’ll need face cleansers and scrubs. These will remove the excess moisture and oil build up as well as the dried sweat and grime from the day. Moisturise in the evenings to treat and calm the effects of the sun. Wherever you go, make sure you drink lots of water!

What products should we be taking with us on holiday?

Sunscreen! SPF 30 and above, natural and with no oxybenzone. Take hats and sunglasses. Pack a cleanser, scrub, moisturiser and lip balm.

Help us out: what do the different levels of SPF actually mean?

SPF is a relative measure of how well your sunscreen will protect. The higher the SPF rating, the more protection. To get the most protection, you want a broad-spectrum sunscreen because these protect against UVB and UVA rays. However, it’s important to note that no sunscreen blocks 100%.

In fact, a really high SPF is not much more protective than an SPF of 30 or 50. An SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays whilst SPF 30 only blocks 97%. The key is to make sure you’re actually using sunscreen and applying it often.

Can our skin change dramatically being in the city vs the countryside?

Yes! Cities have more pollution that will make skin dirty and grimy. The countryside may be more windswept with clearer air which means more exposure to the elements. Do your research on where you’re going and pack accordingly. A basic regime of a cleanser, scrub, moisturiser, sunscreen and lip balm should see you right for most conditions.

How can we prolong our tans?

The best way to keep your tan is to moisturise and moisturise some more. Keep well hydrated, too.

We’re all different with different skin tones – does one SPF suit all or should we tailor what we use?

People have different levels of natural protection – this is relatively self-evident, but you need to learn your own skin type and what works for you.

In general, take small steps and adjust your routine and regimen daily over summer until you have a daily routine that is bulletproof. Fair skin needs a lot more protection, with a minimum of 30 SPF. For darker skin types, it’s still extremely important to be vigilant when exposing the skin to the sun’s rays and to use sunscreen regularly.

Should we be using different products after we’ve tanned?

Yes! Use different products once you’re tanned – sunscreen before, after sun afterwards. Carry an after sun product with an aloe vera base; this is a soothing tonic for sun-damaged skin.

How can we avoid getting the dreading sunglasses tan mark?

Go swimming more often or lose the sunnies for five minutes a day.

Is over-exfoliation damaging to our skin and, if so, why?

No, not really, we think exfoliating is good! Clean, exfoliated skin feels and looks great so go for it. However, we do say to keep it to twice a week – once for business and once for pleasure. This allows your skin to recover and gain a natural balance and oil production.
